Awesome tree I found today. I love New Jersey it so so easy to explore
Here are the notes!
Stockholm syndrome false narrative
Robbery in Sweden 1973 of bank
Yanna eric Olsen, takes four hostages (bank employees)
Olsen asks Police for 5 mil us bucks and clark olafson, notorious gangster (Swedish folk hero at the time basically)
Police release olafson from prison and band him over to Olsen in bank
Becomes national news story 24 hour coverage a la jfk assassination
Hostages go back to vault after using bathroom unaccompanied, could’ve run to policemen in lobby but didn’t
When hostages talk to police w olafson accompanying them, their body language is hostile and they are frowning st police
Olafson finds phone and is giving interviews to the news, gives one of the hostages the phone and news asks if she’s okay and she’s like they are gentlemen treating us well and the news is like so you four are just hanging out and she’s like we aren’t 4 we’re six
Another hostage interview in which she basically says the police are more dangerous to them than Olsen/olafson, doesn’t sound scared just sounds angry (at police)
6 days they are hostages, apparently hostages are helping break security cameras etc helping Olsen and olafson out
When police finally get Olsen and olafson the hostages all hug them and say to the police don’t hurt them, saying I’ll see you again etc
Experts then saying that the hostages developed romantic attachment to captors (aka Stockholm syndrome)
THIS IS WRONG!
actual details are different:
Police had no idea what they were doing cause taking of hostages in Sweden didn’t happen
So brought in negotiator, famous Swedish psychiatrist, but gave bad advice: told police to sneak into bank and to give Olsen traceable bills (when Olsen asked for 5 mil), give them obviously drugged beers = hostages seeing police acting stupid and basically endangering their lives by making Olsen mad
Biggest mistake was giving Olsen olafson, bc once he came he was like bro you can’t have the hostages tied up, calmed Olsen down and was charming, brought phone so hostages could call their families = hostages like captors
Olafson’s friend connects him to prime minister of Sweden, one hostage gets on phone w him and is like let us go we want to go we’ll go with these guys even we just want to leave the bank and he was like no “wouldn’t it feel good for you to die on your post” aka like die for your country and she says there are enough dead heros = WTF!
In the transcripts that part of the conversation is mysteriously gone
Police then lock hostages in w the captors in vault, and the hostages are like ???!!! If the captors are so dangerous why tf would you lock us up with them in here clearly you don’t care about us and the gov doesn’t care if we live
Police start to drill into vault, cement is falling on the hostages and Olsen and olafson are like stop you’re gonna end up hurting the hostages
Then police tear gas the vault … BRUH
Then captors finally surrender post tear gas and then they hug, duh cause they just survived that together!
Police brutalizing
First question hostages receive in hospital by a psychologist is “are you in love with olafson” ?!!!!
When did the term Stockholm syndrome come about? Not actually right after the robbery
Comes from NYPD
1970s hostage negotiations were a new thing in usa
1973 post robbery guy who was put in charge of nypd hostage negotiation plan creation was Harvey schlossberg (JEWISH I’m Jewish so I can say this), first used the term Stockholm syndrome and defined it
1974 patty Hearst kidnapping -> Stockholm syndrome goes into public mainstream cause
